The mission of the CWSF is "to celebrate the creativity and talents of young scientists in a setting that involves both the educational system and the community." These web sites document the annual science fairs. The sites vary, but most include a list of winners along with descriptions of their projects.

This valuable web site includes a chat room, message board and a newsletter. The site also has a "science rules" page that lists some experiments that children can try at home. Parents who teach their children at home will appreciate the support and information that this page offers.

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame is "an enduring tribute to Canadian men and women, now and in the past, who have contributed to the understanding of disease and improved the health of people everywhere." The CMEC is a forum for Ministers of Education to discuss educational issues that apply to all of Canada, not just individual provinces and territories. The site lists current topics of discussion and upcoming symposiums.

Eureka! Stories

The Exploration Network (EXN.ca)

"EXN.ca is the website for the Discovery Channel Canada." The Discovery Channel was the first Canadian television channel to have an official web site. The site has been active since 1994. In the years that have followed, it has become one of the most extensive and impressive educational sites in Canada.

It also offers useful tips such as "safety rules for internet use" and "bully advice for kids." Parents should note that this site is quite politically charged.

Let's Talk Science

"Let's Talk Science is a national registered charitable organization working to develop a society that is scientifically literate and globally competitive through innovative educational programs, research and advocacy." The "Let's Talk Science Partnership Program" links grade school and high school teachers with graduate students. Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) -- Bilingual

NSERC is a federal agency that seeks to encourage the advancement of science in Canadian universities. It is the scientific counterpart to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC); both organizations are important funding sources for academics. Application forms for NSERC grants are available online at this site.

Through this web site, educators "can access hundreds of hands-on lessons, student activities, virtual field trips, and other teacher resources linked to the Ontario Curriculum in Science and Technology strands chart." The site is visited by thousands of students from across Canada every day, often as part of their provincial school curriculum." The site includes science and math experiments, a quiz, an extensive resource page and an "ask a scientist" section. You can search science.ca's Canadian scientist database by category, region and gender.

Though this web site is primarily for journalists, it contains sections that are useful to teachers, students and the general public, such as the "Canadian Science and Health Resource Index" and the "Glossary and pronunciation guide."

The Toronto Public Library has created an extensive list of science links. This web site is exceptionally well organized; you can search the list by subject or alphabetically. Sites that are Canadian, created by a student, or are slow to download are marked accordingly.

"This web site has been created for both science teachers and students." Despite this claim, teachers will get more out of the site than will students. The site is useful for finding conferences details and recent publications.

In many respects, this award-winning web site appears to be one of the best Canadian Internet resources for students and teachers of science. While much of the site is out of date, it is still worth looking at for the games, articles and links that still work.
