About Making Waves™ |
|
Waves are all around us. From the radio waves that transmit television programs to the ultrasound waves used in medical diagnosis, waves are a constant part of our lives. Despite the ubiquity of waves, the notion of their interaction is a difficult one for many students. While a single wave may be easy to picture, the interaction of several propagating waves is difficult to imagine. Accurately drawing the interference pattern of just two waves on a blackboard takes considerable effort. Depicting the interactions between waves with differing properties--and simultaneously comparing those interactions--is simply not feasible. Textbooks are an improvement, but they still fail to represent the dynamic nature of waves. Due to such limitations, introductory physics studies often cannot convey the full complexity of wave interaction. This situation is unfortunate, since a solid understanding of waves is necessary for productive future studies in physics and many other sciences. Making Waves™ was designed for use in senior high school and college physics studies. The software offers interactive real-time simulation; editable wave properties including amplitude, wavelength, phase shift, speed, frequency and damping; standing waves; and mks units. Online help and tutorials are provided to help teachers integrate the software into their curriculum. With Making Waves™, students can now explore the interaction of waves using only their computer, Living Graph Paper™ and their imagination. |
